Museum Nord, Lofotr Viking Museum

Meet the Vikings. Smell the tar, taste the food, feel the history. The Vikings have been awaiting you for more than 1000 years. Welcome to the Viking age.

Travelling in time makes one hungry. For those who are too few to be classed as a group, we also have a number of alternatives in both the Museum Café (summer) and in the Chieftain’s House (every evening all year round, plus at lunchtime in summer). Groups of over 15 people are requested to contact us well in advance, so that we can customise your Viking meal/event.

There are several information boards in the area. From May to September, the Viking ship will be moored at the quayside and you are welcome aboard. In the summer you can help sail or row the ship. You can also try your hand at axe-throwing, archery, riding Nordland horses in a ring (children only), and a number of other activities from 15 June to 31 August. It takes about 15-20 minutes to walk along the gravelled pathways from the Chieftain’s House to the Viking Ship Harbour down by the sea (approx. 1400 metres). There are good spots for taking photographs along the way.

Elegant historical jewellery, the Viking Age board game Hnefatafl, jigsaw puzzles, wooden swords, shields, and other children’s toys. T-shirts, woollen hats, mittens, jumpers, scarves, and other textiles. Locally made soaps, creams, herbs, and a few selected foodstuffs such as seasoning and jams – all made with local ingredients. Cookery books, history books, and words of wisdom from the Viking Age. Cups and mugs, replicas from the Viking Age, and modern goods – in our pleasant museum shop you will find a little of everything and hopefully something perfect for yourself.
The museum shop is open during museum opening hours and can be accessed without a ticket. Welcome inside!

Small children can ride Nordland horses (in a ring) in July, we sail and row Viking ships and you can try your hand at axe-throwing and archery. There is a blacksmith in the smithy several days a week, craftsmen in the Chieftain’s House and Viking fare is served both during the day and evening. There are no outdoor activities in the spring, autumn or winter, but large parts of the grounds are accessible (not in winter), so you can go down to the Viking ship moorings and stroll along pleasant gravelled pathways. We invite guests to a Viking feast in the evening all year round.

Children can download the Baahdy & Birdy app prior to their arrival at the museum (Apple Store and Google Play Store - search for “baahdy & birdy”, only available in Norwegian). The museum content is only available when you are in immediate proximity of the contact points on museum's premises. There is also a fun game included in the app.
