Excavation has found 10th-century settlement and Norse artefacts

Polotsk (now in Belarus) lies on the river Dvina, an important route to the Black Sea, using the portage of Vitebsk to cross to the Dnieper between Polotsk and Kiev.

Excavation has revealed a 10th-century settlement and the increasing discovery of Norse objects have included gold and items engraved with runes.
