Open the big wooden door of the Ornavik historical park and you are immediately immersed in another world, in another time.
Hands-on Dynamic Experiences
The Ornavik project is based on scientific method and focuses on giving a hands-on experience to its visitors. The objective is to make the knowledge usually found only in books and museums a dynamic experience for all.
Based on experimental archaeology, every building you see in the park has been built by the same process used in the 10th century.
The site offers a rare opportunity to meet volunteers who play the role of inhabitants, workers, farmers or merchants. The volunteers live completely in the medieval culture and you will discover, in this real living history of tradition, how the people worked and how the families lived in the Middle Ages.
You will escape the buzz of modern life and enter into the peace and quiet of the wild, hear the crackle of fire and the rasping of manual saws. Change to a slow pace of life, have conversation in the shadows of trees, enjoy construction of stone walls by hand, or the craft of jewel-making.
The educational goal of Ornavik is to pass on knowledge of the ancestral crafts such as thatching, shingle-making , wattle and daub, cloth-making and more.
