Vikingvalley Gudvangen/Utvikling AS (GUAS)

Experience the life and atmosphere of a Viking-Age society in this reconstructed town

Viking Valley is a Viking town comprising 18 historic houses. Constructed following Viking-Age building techniques, it is not a replica of any exisitng town , but a reconstruction of how it is thought a town might have looked if it had been situated here. This is based on the assumption that Gudvangen was an important centre of trade and communication (Anne Stine Ingstad: ‘Oseberg Dronningens Grav’, 1993).

The life and atmosphere of a Viking-Age society has been recreated and visitors can observe and take part in many activities, including:

  • Archery
  • Cooking
  • Textile techniques
  • Woodworking
  • Making fire
  • Board and dice games such as Hnefatafl
  • Ball games
  • Viking wrestling (glima)
  • Blacksmithing and watching the manufacture of bog iron and charcoal

Visitors can see and speak to the people who actually live in all the historic buildings. Some of the town inhabitants work at the site and some are volunteers.
