Peel Castle is situated on St Patrick’s Isle. The isle has been occupied since prehistoric times and also shows evidence of early Christian significance. It was a significant Viking-Age burial ground, the final resting place of many wealthy citizens, including a pagan lady with a stunning necklace.
The isle became the site of the fort of Magnus Barefoot around 1098 and continued to be strategically important during the period of the Norse-ruled Kingdom of Man and the Isles.
