The history of Catoira has been closely related to the strategic importance of Torres de Oeste military complex. The fortress served as a defensie shield for Galcia during the Middle Ages against Viking attacks.
Every year, on the first Sunday in August, the inhabitants of Catoira recall the time when people fought fot rhe defence of these lands against the Normans. Since it's first edition in 1960, the Romaría Vikinga has turned this fight into a joyful celebration in which the attack to the Torres de Oeste fortress carried out by nothern warriors is pacifically reenacted.
There is a museum (CACTO-Centro de Activación Cultural Torres de Oeste) that offers an approach to the Vikings footprint and the festival Romaria Vikinga.
