Site Overview

Spend a day seeing five famous Viking ships

A visit to the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde – home of five world-famous Viking ships – offers exciting exhibitions and activities for the whole family.

With the sound of the waves and the smell of tar and fresh wood, the Viking Ship Museum is located right by Roskilde Fjord and is a great attraction for anyone with Viking blood in their veins. Here you will find plenty of activities, history, atmosphere and a beautiful harbour with traditional, Nordic boats and full-size Viking ships.

Learning and Activities

The Viking Ship Museum focuses on the Vikings’ maritime craftsmanship and their impressive ships.

Exhibition Hall

There are five original Viking ships: five ships that bear witness to war, trade and sea voyages to distant places.

Basement

There are special exhibitions in the basement, and, in the interactive room, you can go on board two full-size Viking ships that are fully equipped with weapons, trading goods, sail and rigging. You can also dress up as a Viking.

Boatyard

Follow the building of a replica Viking ship. The skilled boatbuilders use the same tools, materials and techniques as the Vikings did 1,000 years ago. From 1st May to mid-October meet the craftspeople in their outdoor workshops and try your hand at boatbuilding, rope making, blacksmithing or sail making.

Sailing Season

Between 1st May and 30th September, visitors can step on board a traditional boat, row out into the Roskilde Fjord and set sail – just as the Vikings did!
